Ethics In Photojournalism
This image was shot by George Kochaniec after the terrible shootings at Columbine High School. On April 20, 1999, the town of Littleton, Colorado seemed an unlikely place for a tragedy that would leave twelve high school students and a teacher murdered by two students-turned-shooters.
When word of the shooting reached the Rocky Mountain News, Kochaniec rushed to Columbine High School, where he found “a scene that was surreal...kids bleeding...TV reporters crying...scary. It will never go away.”
Kochaniec remained away from the immediate chaos at the school and took shots from further away, which makes the backstory more ethical than what it could be. He took some close-up shots like this one to show the deep anguish of the students who had fled the high school. This may not be as unethical as other images due to the fact that it was not as invasive and shots of gore could have been taken instead. It is not as unethical because there was nothing he could "technically" have done to assist at that point, considering it was after the shootings occured.
