Ethics In Photojournalism
In Kenya of September 21, 2013, 72 innocent people died and more than 175 were injured after a massive shooting at Westgate shopping mall, an upscale Nairobi mall, by al-Shabab, a Somalian militant group.
This particular issue of Sunday Nation featured a woman screaming in pain while blood streaks down her face. Controvery struck with this image because this is a human being, experiencing pain fear and anguish far beyond anything that most people ever go through. Photography like this should not be a method and addition to sell papers. I feel as the image was was less about telling the story more to shock readers and sell more papers.
The graphic nature of the Sunday Nation’s photo was a bad editing choice and there was an even worse choice on the photographer’s part to snap the photo in the first place. It's easy to see that this woman was screaming in agony while this unharmed photographer shoved a camera in her face, which is just unethical and completely immoral.
